Beware the Microsoft Virus Pop-Up Scam

You’re enjoying your day online when suddenly—BAM!—a big warning takes over your computer screen. It says something scary like Your computer is infected! Call Microsoft immediately at this number.” Sometimes there’s even a loud voice telling you not to turn off your computer.

Here’s the truth: This is a scam. Your computer is NOT infected with a virus.
Microsoft will never call you or ask you to call them. These fake warnings are designed to trick you into giving strangers remote access to your computer—or paying for “repairs” you don’t need.

I’ll be honest—this makes me so very angry. Scammers, usually from overseas, deliberately target a generation of Americans who grew up in a time when a handshake meant something and a stranger’s word could be trusted. These criminals exploit that trust, and it’s just plain wrong. My mission is to help protect you from ever increasing schemes and scams so your confidence, security, and peace of mind stay right where they belong—with you.

What to do if it happens:

  • Don’t click any buttons on the pop-up.

  • Don’t call the phone number.

  • Close your web browser. If it won’t close or your mouse seems to no longer be active, simply restart your computer by pressing the power button.

  • If you’re unsure, call a trusted friend, family member, or tech helper (like me) for advice. I will happily walk you through what to do.

A little caution can save you from a big headache. If something feels urgent, scary, or pushes you to act right now, that should be a sign to slow down and double-check before doing anything.

Stay safe, and remember—your best defense is knowing the signs of a scam before it happens.
